Qualifications

Dr Apurv Vaidya says – What my patients like about me?

In my surgical career spanning more than 24 years, I have been fortunate enough to have operated upon more than 10,000 patients, who now consider me a very special family member. While talking to them, I often ask them – apart from my surgical skills, what qualifies me for this rare and cherished honour? The replies I usually receive from my patients and their families have reaffirmed my belief – that complete patient satisfaction is much more than a successful surgery.

The comments I get from my patients and their families are

  • You spend a lot of time in talking, explaining and educating the patient and family before and after surgery.
  • You never force a patient for surgery against his/her will and offer non-surgical options wherever appropriate.
  • You make it a point to discuss all possible desirable and undesirable outcomes in detail before surgery.
  • You perform entire surgery (or as said commonly – skin to skin) yourself, not leaving even less critical parts of surgery to assistants
  • You visit your patients daily and make sure to update the anxious relatives waiting outside, about their loved one’s condition.
  • You are always available for follow-up visits and remember most of the patients by name even years after surgery.

I have learnt that the patients like being treated as human beings and not as owners or possessors of a disease.

LIMCA BOOK OF RECORDS: LARGEST TUMOUR REMOVED FROM CHEST

Dr. Apurv Vaidya operated upon a very serious patient in January 2015 and removed a huge tumor weighing 9.5 kg from her chest and saved her life. This is probably the heaviest tumor removed from the chest in India.

Limca Book of Records has accepted this achievement as a new national record.

Starting a New Cardiac Surgery Centre

As a service to his speciality and society, Dr Apurv Vaidya has helped in starting and streamlining many new cardiac surgical programs with a missionary zeal. This has helped in increasing the reach of cardiac surgical services to the larger part of population around city of Vadodara. Many of these hospitals also cater to underprivileged population under various government schemes – offering them these lifesaving surgeries that were unavailable or unaffordable to them so far.

In a career spanning more than 24 years, as independently operating cardiothoracic surgeon, who has worked in different types of cardiac surgical setups – from most basic to world class, Dr Apurv Vaidya has developed a deep understanding about technical aspects of cardiac surgical setup. What a setup should be, how to make it safe for patients and professionals and how to start one from the scratch.

Dr Apurv Vaidya has a team of professionals who specialise in starting new cardiac surgical program in new or existing hospitals and they are passionate about reviving a dysfunctional or dormant cardiac surgical program in existing hospitals.

He has vast experience of starting new cardiac surgical centres. This includes designing, supervising and initiating cardiac surgical program. His team has successfully started or rejuvenated cardiac surgical program in more than 10 hospitals in and around Vadodara city.

He usually guides hospitals right from planning stage about location and size of cardiac operating rooms and gives design inputs from surgeon (end user’s) perspective. This would include inputs on topics like location of operation theatres, operation lights, operation table, heart lung machine, anaesthesia machine, surgical pendant, primary monitor, laminar air flow, air-conditioning system, location of medical gas outlets (oxygen, compressed air, suction etc.), number of electrical points, power backup, location of image viewer, slave monitor etc. This prevents costly revisions at a later stage.

Once physical structure is complete, he and his team guide hospitals about purchase of major surgical equipment like heart lung machine, operation table, anaesthesia machine, operating lights, electrosurgical unit, patient monitor, pacemaker, IABP, surgical instruments, other basic OT equipment, CSSD etc.

Their team can give valuable inputs in design and quantity of surgical linen, purchase of major consumables and disposables and all other things needed to start a cardiac surgical program from the scratch.

They can also help hospitals in selecting properly qualified staff and can train them to work in cardiac surgical setup.

Lastly, he and his team can perform a few initial cardiac surgeries in a new setup to make sure that the new setup is reliable, nothing has been overlooked and it is safe for patients and staff working in it.

Setups Dr Apurv Vaidya and his team have started or rejuvenated so far are:
